Fuwai Hospital is the national cardiovascular referral centre of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and by cardiac surgical volume it is the largest dedicated heart hospital in the country — more than 15,000 cardiac operations a year against 1,700 beds.
The number that matters for a patient is not the total but the concentration: a surgeon here does one kind of operation, repeatedly, all year. That is the main reason outcomes at high-volume cardiac centres differ from outcomes at general hospitals, and it is why Chinese cardiologists send their own complex cases here.
International patients are seen in a separate building with a dedicated cardiac ICU, and case managers work in English. The hospital also runs one of the few dedicated pulmonary vascular units in Asia, which is relevant if you have been told your pulmonary hypertension is inoperable.
